Australia’s National Centre of Excellence in Posttraumatic Mental Health
Phoenix Australia conducts research and translates knowledge into action, such as improved treatment options and greater support for trauma-affected individuals, families and communities.
EML has partnered with Phoenix Australia on a variety of initiatives and you can find more about what we have achieved together through the videos and resources below.
Occupational Violence and Aggression (OVA) Phase 1
EML has recently partnered with Phoenix Australia to conduct research into OVA. The initial findings highlighted that many healthcare workers have experienced some degree of violence and aggression in their careers; either from those they are caring for and/or from visiting family members or friends.
In the video below Alexandra Howard Director, Disaster and Public Health Emergencies Phoenix Australia and Merryn Courtney Mutual Benefits Partnership Manager outline the importance of this research and the vital role EML customers BaptistCare, Bolton Clarke, Bupa, Estia Health and Australian Unity played in the success of this phase of the project, which included scoping interviews, focus groups and an online survey.
PTSD Recovery Guides
As part of our commitment to helping people get their lives back, we support initiatives which help workers in emergency services. Emergency service workers have a high exposure to potentially traumatic events, increasing their risk of developing PTSD and other psychological injuries.
We have a specific area of our website dedicated to helping to protect emergency service workers from the impacts of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and psychological injuries. Our range of videos, guides, and articles have been developed through collaborations with organisations including NSW Police, NSW Fire and Rescue, the Black Dog Institute and Phoenix Australia.
In the video below you can hear from Alexandrea Howard Director, Director, Disaster and Public Health Emergencies Phoenix Australia and Katie Giddins Head of Mutual Benefits EML, discuss the range of recovery after trauma guides which were designed to provide information for workers at a time when they need it most.
Supporting mental health in bushfire affected communities
Through a combination of staff fundraising, business contributions and our Mutual Benefits Program we provided $100,000 to Phoenix Australia, the largest single donation it’s ever received, to develop resources to support community-based mental health care for people impacted by the 2019/2020 bushfires.
EML’s contribution made it possible for the not-for-profit organisation to develop mental health training and resources for emergency service workers, health providers and community members affected by the devastating fires. Watch the video below to learn more about this wonderful program of work.
